Introducing Wegovy Tablets

Wegovy® tablets are a new once-daily weight loss treatment containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in Wegovy injections. Recently approved in the UK, they offer an effective alternative for people who would prefer not to use weekly injections.

Like Wegovy injections and Mounjaro® injections, Wegovy tablets work by reducing appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer, reducing food cravings, and making it easier to eat smaller portions. They should be used alongside healthy eating and increased physical activity for the best results.

How Are Wegovy Tablets Taken?

Unlike the weekly Wegovy or Mounjaro injections, Wegovy tablets are taken once every day.

To ensure the medication is absorbed properly, the tablet must be:

• Taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach
• Swallowed whole with a small amount of water
• Followed by at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medications

Treatment starts at a low dose and is gradually increased over several months to help minimise side effects.

 Wegovy® Tablet Dosing and Dose Increases

Wegovy® tablets are started at a low dose and increased gradually over time. This helps your body adjust to the medication and reduces the likelihood of side effects such as nausea, indigestion, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea.

Most patients will begin on the lowest dose and increase every four weeks, provided they are tolerating treatment well and require additional appetite suppression or weight loss support.

A typical dosing schedule is:

Weeks 1–4                         1.5mg once daiy

Weeks 5–8                       4mg once daily

Weeks   9–12                  9mg once daily

Weeks   13–onwards         25 mg once daily   

Not everyone will need to reach the highest dose. Many patients achieve excellent appetite control and steady weight loss on lower doses. During your treatment, our pharmacy team will review your progress, weight loss, appetite control, and any side effects to determine whether a dose increase is appropriate.

What If I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, simply take your next dose at the usual time the following day. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed tablet. 

How Much Weight Can You Expect to Lose?

Weight loss results vary between individuals, but clinical studies have shown that people taking Wegovy tablets can lose an average of approximately 14–17% of their starting body weight over 12–16 months when combined with lifestyle changes.

For example:

• A  person weighing 100 kg may lose around 14–17 kg
• A  person weighing 120 kg may lose around 17–20 kg

Many patients begin noticing reduced appetite within the first few weeks, with meaningful weight loss typically becoming apparent after the first few months of treatment.

 Can I Switch From Wegovy or Mounjaro Injections?

Patients already using Wegovy or Mounjaro injections may be able to switch directly to Wegovy tablets subject to the professional opinion of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician and being clinically suitable. The most appropriate timing and dose will depend on your current treatment. Patients currently using Mounjaro injections may also be able to transition to Wegovy tablets, although weight loss results may differ and individual clinical circumstances need to be considered.
